Emotional Regulation for Anxiety: The STOP Technique

The STOP Technique is a quick way to interrupt anxiety in the moment. When you notice anxious thoughts or body sensations building, you

  • STOP—create a small pause—then,
  • Take a Deep Breath to help steady your breathing and calm your nervous system. Next,
  • Observe what’s happening right now (notice thoughts, feelings, urges, and sensations) without getting dragged into them. Finally,
  • Proceed with your next step in a more chosen, grounded way.

It works because anxiety often pulls you into automatic patterns—your mind races, your body ramps up, and your actions follow. It can feel like a never-ending cycle.

STOP helps you slow the cycle at the exact point where you regain choice, so you can respond with intention rather than reactivity.

If you or someone you know is experiencing anxiety, stress, or panic, consider reaching out to a qualified mental health professional. You don’t have to manage it alone.
