What is Peer Support?

Peer support, (or Peer-to-Peer Counselling), involves individuals with shared experiences who provide emotional, social, or practical help to one another. This form of psychosocial support is based on mutual understanding and respect, where peers relate to each other through their experience of similar challenges, e.g., mental health issues, trauma, life experiences, and profession. Unlike traditional counselling, peer support emphasises connection and shared experiences rather than clinical expertise.

What is Peer Support Useful For?

Peer support is useful for a variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, substance use, and coping with life events such as loss, chronic illness, cancer diagnosis, parenting, and relationship stress. It can enhance emotional resilience, reduce feelings of isolation, and empower individuals to manage their mental health more effectively. Peer support can lead to increased quality of life, self-esteem, and a feeling of connection. Clients often enjoy peer support as a way to talk through challenges with someone outside of their personal circle.

What Does Peer Support Look Like?

When attending a peer support appointment, you can expect a safe and judgement-free environment where you are free to share your experiences and feelings openly. Your peer supporter will focus on building a supportive relationship with you, and may share their own similar experiences. During these sessions, you may engage in discussions, receive encouragement, and develop coping strategies, all while feeling understood and validated in your experiences.

Can I Individualise My Support Journey?

Your first session will be a long appointment so you can share your preferences with your peer supporter, and set the tone for the support journey ahead. This is a great opportunity to let your peer supporter know what you envision your support journey to look like for you.

The Peer Support Process

First Appointment

The peer supporter-client relationship begins with an initial session where you get to know each other, build rapport, and set boundaries.

Your peer supporter may ask questions to understand your presenting concerns, personal history, life circumstances, and goals. This helps your supporter to truly understand your situation, and how they can be of assistance.

Initial appointments are a little longer than regular appointments, but they are essential to ensure the best possible support.

Subsequent Appointments

After the initial appointment, the next steps include actively sharing experiences and providing mutual support, while ensuring a safe environment for open communication.

You may maintain regular contact with your peer supporter, to work through ongoing issues, or you may decide to utilise peer support to work through a specific life event only.

Benefits and Progress

Peer support creates a safe, non-judgmental environment where individuals can share their experiences and feelings with others who understand their struggles. It can also complement professional counselling by providing practical coping strategies and emotional support between sessions.

Participants often report increased self-esteem and confidence as they engage with others who have similar lived experiences, making it a valuable resource for those seeking to improve their mental health without the financial burden of traditional counselling.
