What is Individual Counselling?
Counselling is a confidential, professional, therapeutic process between a counsellor and their client. During each appointment, a qualified counsellor will help their client to explore and understand emotions and current challenges, with the overall goal of improving mental health and wellbeing.
Evidenced-based therapeutic frameworks may be used, such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Brief Therapy, Positive Psychology, and others, depending on your needs.
Throughout the therapeutic process, you (the client) will be invited to set the tone and pace for each session, as your counsellor guides you towards the accomplishment of your therapeutic goals.
Your first counselling session will be a long appointment so you can share your preferences with your counsellor, and set the tone for the therapeutic journey ahead. This is a great opportunity to let your counsellor know what you envision the therapeutic journey to look like for you.
The Counselling Process
Initial Assessment
The counsellor-client relationship begins with an Intake Assessment. During this appointment your counsellor may ask questions to understand your presenting concerns, personal history, current life circumstances, and therapeutic goals. This helps us to create a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
Intake assessments are a little longer than regular appointments, but they are essential to ensure positive therapeutic outcomes.
Establishing Goals
Based on the assessment, you and your counsellor will collaboratively set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals for therapy.
These goals serve as a roadmap for the therapeutic process and provide direction for future sessions.
Exploration and Insight
In subsequent sessions, your counsellor will endeavour to create a safe and supportive environment for you to explore your thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and behaviours.
Through reflective listening, empathy, and insightful questioning, your counsellor can help you to gain a deeper understanding of your journey, your relationships, and your life experiences.
Skill Building
Counselling often involves teaching clients coping skills and strategies to deal with stress, anxiety, depression, anger, communication issues, or other mental health concerns.
These skills may include a variety of techniques and therapeutic exercises, which align with your therapeutic goals.
Building Self Confidence
Your Counsellor may assist you to cultivate awareness, compassion, and acceptance (of self and of others).
You may learn to challenge negative self-perceptions, build self-esteem, and develop a greater sense of confidence and self-worth.
Monitoring Progress
Throughout the counselling process, you will be invited to regularly review progress.
Adjustments to goals and treatment plans may be made, based on your evolving needs and progress.
